  1. why does a whistle change whether a loose-ball technical is time-serving? – May 18, 2021

In the first two scenarios covered in the last meeting, Team A commits a loose-ball technical foul and then Team B commits a personal foul. In the first case, the personal foul occurs before the whistle is sounded; in the second case, the personal foul is committed after the whistle stops play. In the first case, both players serve time; in the second case, only Team B serves. What is the rationale for the different treatment?

  2. when do loose-ball technical fouls become time-serving? – May 18, 2021

In one of the scenarios covered in the last meeting, there was a case where a player had to serve a 30-second penalty for a loose-ball push. What other scenarios cause a loose-ball technical foul to become time-serving?

  3. both sticks illegal after a period ends with possession – May 18, 2021

As a period comes to a close, Team A possesses the ball as the whistle sounds. Between periods, officials do a random stick check on players from both teams. Both sticks are found to have deep pockets. How is this adjudicated?

  4. Inadvertent Whistle on Faceoff – May 16, 2021

In a recent game we had an inadvertent whistle on a faceoff and the ball had not yet crossed the defensive area line. We handled it by refacing off since that is how to handle it when the ball goes out of bounds and you don’t know who touched it last

The rule book references how to handle an inadvertent whistle on a face off when the ball has crossed the defensive area line (4.3.2 Situation D) Award the ball according to alternate possession. However it does not appear the rule book addresses how to handle an inadvertent whistle on a face off if the ball has not crossed the defensive area line.

    Did we handle it properly?

  5. mouthpiece violation during dead ball – May 13, 2021

If you do a check between quarters, and the player does not have a mouthpiece, does he serve time, or does the other team just get the ball to start the quarter?

  6. Stick Checks on Face Off Sticks – May 13, 2021

What (if any) allowances do we make for a face-off stick when doing a stick check? I try to avoid checking face off sticks but sometimes they get grabbed by mistake or a coach requests a check. My philosophy has been as long as everything else is good and the ball comes out freely, I'm not worried about the 3" at the throat of the cross or using the card to check it as those sticks gets so warped. Is this alright or should we be following the letter of the law?

  7. Over and back – May 12, 2021

Offensive team has ball checked out of stick after getting into the box in ensuing ground ball the ball crosses midfield line should that be over and back even if the defending touches the ball with stick but never had possession

  8. Keeping it in – May 12, 2021

Does the winning team have to keep it in the box under 2 minutes even if they are man up?

  9. Body check during faceoff – May 10, 2021

At what point during a faceoff can one player legally body-check an opposing player?

  10. Loose ball personal foul – May 6, 2021

    Situation:
After a face off (or a shot on goal that hits the post and rebounds back onto the field ), when the ball is loose and there is a scrum for the ball and no player has yet gained possession and a flag is thrown for a personal foul, what is the correct procedure or when does the whistle or the flag down end the play?

    (1) kill the loose ball situation at the time of the personal foul and the ref then enforces the personal foul ? or
    (2) does the official wait to see if the offended team gets possession of the ball and let the play continue or
    (3) kill the loose ball situation when the fouling team gains possession of the ball?

I have spoken to several refs about this situation and I got various replies.
