Riti's Answer: Visual Text Tyma's Answer: Visual Text An alternative to Rick's view -- which is a strict and literal reading of the rules -- is that the officials made a mistake when they stopped play for a time-out when the requesting team was not in possession. We've all heard frantic calls for time-outs to save a possession in contested play that are more aspirational than realistic because the requesting team doesn't yet have possession, and we ignore the request or announce "no possession" as the reason the time-out cannot be granted -- we do not penalize it.
