- Another Re-Start Question – May 5, 2021
This actually happened today: turnover at midfield, A picks it up and B is standing directly in front of him 2 yards away. A throws the ball over B's head and it is intercepted by another B player 15 yards downfield. I immediately throw and blow it dead. Give the B player a minor penalty for not giving 5 yards on the restart. I explain to B coach at the next break the reasoning for my call. He buys it and we go on. I assume I called it correctly. Now I ask :
-same situation, but the A player now turns and throws the ball back to his goalie in the crease. The goalie stunningly misses the pass and the ball goes in the goal with the B player within 5 yards of the thrower-in ! Goal or no goal ?
-can we assume the following : if any B player is within 5 yards of thrower-in A and this A player throws the ball ,upon hearing the whistle , the pass is
basically a free pass with no consequences to A ?
-IF the above is true then why couldn't A , seeing that B is within 5 yards, simply throw the ball anywhere and get at worst a 30 second penalty against
the B player/team.?
As you can see I have alot of time on my hands ! - throwing of the crosse – May 3, 2021
Please correctly adjudicate the following situations......
A. During live ball play, player runs to the substitution box and, without leaving the field, throws his crosse to a coach, who then throws him a different crosse.
B. During live ball play, playing runs into the substitution box and throws his crosse to a coach, who them throws him a different crosse, then runs back on the field.
C. Adjudication of both A. and B. above during a dead ball situation.
- broken stick – May 2, 2021
Does our rule book specify the action a player needs to take when a stick is broken, either live or dead ball ? I let a player run to bench with a broken stick during an end line stoppage, coach was strongly questioning my action. Of course, during live ball I would shout to drop it.
- running time instead of start/stop – April 29, 2021
Are we allowed to have running-time quarters for more time than we would have put on the clock to begin a regular start/stop quarter? For example, could we have 15-minute running-clock quarters for a varsity game? Does it matter what level is being played?
The other day, in a JV game, both coaches asked us for 12-minute running time instead of 10-minute start/stop. The referee on the game said that we couldn’t start a quarter with more than 10 minutes on the clock, per Association policy.
- Coach’s Area – April 28, 2021
Has the Coach's Area be extended due to COVID reasons?
Today during a game I had a Cape Atlantic League Varsity coach tell me due to COVID reasons the Coach's Area was extend to the end line. He claimed that the lacrosse coaches were told this change at the Cape Atlantic League's Preseason Coach's Meeting. - FO Stick tape vs. Contrasting color – April 27, 2021
Article 3 n. speaks about contrasting color between the head and gloves. What are your thoughts about sliver shift ,white head and white gloves? The Note says that can be the shaft color, paint or tape. Some FO players have tape and other do not.
- Over and back violation – April 24, 2021
Under 30 seconds in the fourth quarter team A is up by one goal. After satisfying their advancement count, team A calls timeout. The ball is moved laterally outside the box. Upon the restart, team A will be under a 10-second get it in count. Question is this: since they will be under a 10-second count, can they now throw the ball back into their defensive zone without garnering an over and back call? Or, since it's not an advancement count but a stalling count, does the over and back roll still apply here
- Loose Ball Technical Foul. Time-out Called Before the Restart – April 23, 2021
In a game the other day, A1 pushed B2 while the ball was loose (entitling Team B to possession). Before we sounded the whistle to re-start play, Team A's coach yelled for a time-out. The referee did not allow the time-out because Team B's entitlement to possession overrides the fact that the ball was dead (i.e. Team A can not call a timeout when Team B has possession). Was this correct? I thought either team can call a timeout WHENEVER there is any deadball regardless of why the ball is dead.
- Player acting like a goalie who is not properly equipped – April 21, 2021
Hi -
In the last rules meeting you covered the point of waving off the flag if we could not kill the play before the ball has been shot. The reasoning was that this was a conduct foul - thus a technical foul - and so the scoring of the goal (at least for the first occasion of this foul by the offending team) waves off the flag. My question is since this is an ‘unsportsmanlike’ foul, does this count towards the two unsportsmanlike fouls resulting in an ejection for thst player? How about if the flag is not waved off? Or if the same player commits this foul twice - is that player ejected by rule? - lighting delay time 30 mins – April 21, 2021
