new lacrosse sticks April 12, 2018 Rule 1 0 Forum Questions on my last 3 stick checks, I have found 4 illegal sticks. In each case, they are new sticks, and the card will not fit into the slot, since these sticks are not three inches wide at the bottom. Should I continue to enforce this rule, even though the new sticks do not seem to conform to the rule? This for me this falls under the "don't be that good." It really has to be pinched for it to warrant a penalty. If it is "pinched" from play and we are talking a 1/4" difference (ie the stick measure 2.75" then we can start discussing penalties until then I have nothing, the player is not trying to gain an advantage. I actually had a coach yesterday ask about this, unfortunately, I think that all too many of our guys believe that the card is supposed to fit perfectly inside the stick when in reality it is not due to the nature and contact involved in our sport. The question, especially with the 3" rule, is the player gaining an unfair advantage due to his equipment. If we are talking he has pinched the head on purpose or is using an older none "universal" stick to gain an advantage then we have an issue. Remember the card is inserted quickly and in reality will flex upon insertion into the head of the cross. If you are truly concerned use your tape measure and measure the cross for 3". Riti's Answer: Visual Text Per Rule 1 Section 8 Crosse Prohibitions; Situations and Rulings 1.8, this is a 3 minute non-releasable penalty and the stick stays at the table for the remainder of the game. However, if this is truly a problem with one or more manufacturers that are making heads that are supposed to meet NFHS specifications and they do not, then I think that the Federation needs to address that for us and every states' Association. Seems like until the Federation states that there are indeed manufacturers' problems and they advise how we should handle, then we are bound by Rule 1.8. The solution is for players to request stick checks prior to their game and then use a softball or something else to spread their head, if needed. I had this the other day and that is what we told the player to do. We never checked his stick as part of our normal in-game stick checks so not sure if he did what we suggested or just took his chances. Tyma's Answer: Visual Text Answer File Question Answered Yes No
