2015 Election Candidates

President

Anthony Damelio

In my current role as President of the NJILOA, I am proud of the progress that our Executive Board has made since 2012. Under my leadership, and with the dedication of the Executive Board, we created a plan with aggressive goals and objectives that were successfully implemented and have benefited all members.

Together we have:
• Revamped NJILOA website adding online Registration/Membership, Test and Automated Attendance
• Redefined Cadet Training program adding a Level 2 Cadet curriculum
• Created 3-Man Training Curriculum
• Established Mentoring program
• Completed over 200 Official evaluations
• Instituted a Background Check that complies with NJSIAA requirements
• Registered Organization as 501(c)3
• Maintain full integrity in assigning throughout the County, State/TOC games

In addition to these, there are still many issues that are still work in process – i.e. Renegotiation/Renewal of the Affiliation Agreement with the NJSIAA and a mandated Officials shirt requirement. And although we have made significant improvements over the past 3 years, there is still much to do. I am very confident that with the continued dedication of our Executive Board, the input of the membership, we can continue to make vast improvements to our association, while maintaining our reputation as the “Best Run Officials Association in the NJ”.

I am running for NJILOA President because I believe I can get us back on the right track on many levels. From fees to our finances, I want to try and fix some of our problems. I would like to get more input from members to fix some things have come up in the last year. As an educator and in my current capacity, I have developed positive relations with many AD’s across the state that can certainly work to our advantage. I won’t make any promises about outcomes, but will focus on the process: I want to use surveys to poll members about some of the decisions the board makes. In running the board, I want to ensure that before any vote is taken, the question to be asked is simple: is this decision in the best interest of the membership? I think I have the experience, after serving as ethics chair for the last three years and also being involved in each level of the organization from clinic instructor and evaluator to cadet instructor. We are at a critical juncture in the organization; I believe that it is time for a high school official to run our group.

I’ve had the privilege of serving this outstanding Association for the past 9 years:
4 heading the Observation/Evaluation program developing it from infancy into a useful/beneficial tool that helps many become better referees while also identifying up-‘n-coming newer officials. 2 as Meetings/Attendance Chair putting together RSM agendas both useful+informative.

As Vice-President I oversee the Cadet Training program, my primary responsibility recruiting/training Cadets… I established/head the Cadet Review Committee which screens/selects potential prospects… Setup+Coordinated as many as 7 regional Cadet classes, 4 Cadet/Member Training Clinics in a season… Teach a yearly Cadet class… Assist w/maintaining membership records… Production of our annual Roster Booklet… Serve on the Rules/Mechanics Committee… Official’s liaison for the NNJ Chapter of USLacrosse.

While I also officiate college/club/youth levels, my focus/priority has always been the NJILOA. I have worked long/hard helping our members be better trained, better informed & better prepared to ref HS lacrosse. And I make this promise… I will continue to fight for fair wages for our officials.

After 27 yrs. officiating, it’s still a joy being out on a field & still an honor working to keep this the best sports officials’ organization in NJ.

Please vote for me for Vice-President
Thank you,
MZ

To the NJILOA Membership:

It has been a great honor to serve the membership these past two years as an at-large member of the Executive Board. With that time invested along with many years prior assisting the Board, I have decided to run for the position of Vice President in this upcoming election. I feel the need for leadership should be from officials who mainly officiate high school lacrosse, that continued growth and development of the organization is necessary, the recognition and respect of the NJILOA as being the leader amongst all officiating groups in the state is paramount, but of primary importance is to reach out to our membership for their input on critical issues and decisions. A perfect example is our returning to the Meadowlands for the banquet…at YOUR request. My running for VP is not a commentary on what has gone on in the past, but rather looking at a fresh start going forward. I will not make any promises of what we as a group will accomplish going forward other than all our decisions will ALWAYS have the best interest of the organization, and this sport, as top priority. Thank you for your consideration.

I am running for election to our Executive Board in order to finish the job we’ve started in my time as a board member. I’ve been proud since my first day as an organization cadet, and prouder still to give back as a board member. As part of what is the premier officials association in New Jersey, I am committed to maintaining that status. That means staying ahead of the curve in servicing the leagues we assign and ensuring we provide the best training possible to our officials.

Thanks for your consideration, I look forward to continue working on our board .

My initial exposure to lacrosse was as a player at Kean University. I began officiating with the NJILOA in 2002 and have been a part of witnessing the rapid growth and popularity of the sport throughout the state.

Throughout my career I have done my best to pass along the knowledge and experience I have gained from all the veteran NJILOA officials I have worked with. I have mentored many of the newer officials in Northwest New Jersey and have volunteered teaching during the Peddie on-field clinics. In 2014, I was a member Banquet and Resolutions Committees and was a co-instructor for the Mount Olive Cadet course in 2015.

I would like the opportunity to serve on the membership Executive Committee in an effort to give back to an organization that has given so much to me. I am passionate about being part of the group who will help oversee the direction of officiating lacrosse in New Jersey. I will also seek to advise and suggest ways to improve the areas that are deficient. I am willing to listen and willing to work hard on the issues that the membership deem a priority. Please support me in this venture.

I have been a member of the Executive Board for the past three years. During that time I have been in charge of the annual exam, goodwill and had the opportunity to train many of our younger officials at several of the clinics across the state. This is a very important time for our organization and I feel that I have the experience and knowledge to help lead us back in the right direction and fix some of the issues that have come up over this past year. I would also like to see more opportunities for the members to get involved and voice their opinions. As a teacher and high school official, I believe I have an understanding of what is best for this group and how to improve our relationship with the Athletic Directors and the NJSIAA. The NJILOA has been a big part of my life for the past 15 years. Please allow me the opportunity to continue to lead and represent the membership for the next three years. Thank you.

Vote for JOHN LANEY
Rather than casting a vote based on name recognition or on a candidate’s vague paragraph, NJILOA referees should select a new Executive Board member with experience and with specific ideas.

I am the candidate with both the relevant experience and the ideas to help move the organization forward.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Longtime lacrosse referee for both high school and college
Past President for all statewide soccer referee associations
Referee for college and high school soccer
Master’s degree in administration

PLATFORM

• Reduct cadet numbers in upcoming seasons
• Move the annual banquet to a more central location in NJ
• Implement the recent finding from Referee magazine that the best officials’ organization vote for all positions. Let’s hold elections and establish term limits for: interpreter, secretary/treasurer, cadet instructors, evaluators, and assignors.
• Dissuade the same officials from working multiple games in the late rounds of playoffs.
• Aim to dissolve the NJILOA by the 2020 season and set up two associations: one northern and one southern
• Create a series of awards for rank-and-file members.
• Reduce meeting requirements for members with more than 7 years’ experience.

Thanks for your support.
