With Holding the Ball April 25, 2018 Rule 6 0 Forum Questions This actually happened : Faceoff, 5 players have no idea where the ball is. The 6th player does and goes over to it - about 5-6 yards away- and literally with holds the ball by clamping his stick head over the ball and he then looks around to see what he is going to do with it. No one within 5 yards of him. This clamping goes on for about 2-3 seconds. Do you call withholding when no opponent is near him? Another scenario : goalie makes save and outlets to D-Man on goaline extended-no opponent within 30 yards of him. He accidently drops ball and clamps his stick over it -like in the above case- and does so for some time as he looks around. Do you call withholding ? However, like many rules I think the officials need to manage to the situation. If in scenario 1 it appeared that the five players probably did not know where the ball was because of the clamp, in that case I would immediately whistle for withholding, In scenario 2 where there is no player closer than 30 yards from the player clamping the ball, I would have to see it, but this sounds like an opportunity for the nearest official to communicate with the player that he needs to do something with the ball and that he cannot continue to simply clamp over it. If he continues to clamp for much longer then I would whistle for withholding and give the ball to the other team. In scenario 1 it sounds like the player is gaining an advantage or creating a disadvantage for the other team, but in scenario 2 it does not appear that there is an advantage or disadvantage from the clamping. Rule 6.12 - Withholding Ball From Play - When a loose ball is on the ground, a player shall not lie on the ball, trap it with his crosse longer than is necessary for him to control the ball and pick it up with one continuous motion, or withhold the ball from play in any other manner. A player, players or team shall not deliberately withhold the ball from play... Tyma's Answer: Visual Text Agree with Matt. Answer File Question Answered Yes No
